I think I should probably stick to spring steelhead fishing. We spent the last 3 days in eastern Montana chasing my nemesis - the Wild Turkey. We had great camping, great food, and lots of laughs - but in the end there is no fresh turkey in the freezer. To top it all off, I am pretty sure I have come down with a case of giardia - if you dont know what that is - google it. Let me just tell you that you dont want it.
The plane ride to AK in the morning could potentially be the longest day of my life!

The next 15 days I will be in S.E. Alaska guiding for steelhead with my old buddy Travis on the Adventurous. This year we are running the boat from Wrangell to Juneau and back. Check out Travis’s website at www.alaskacharterservice.com

The snow just keeps coming. If the 108% snowpack we had was good, then the recent storm should put us at about “great” levels. Comparing the numbers to last season - which was a great one, we should be in about the same boat. Now remember, the spring rains and early air temps are crucial to keeping a steady run-off. Not that ANY of us can control that sort of thing, it just helps to recognize the weather patterns that effect our fishing conditions.
On Bailouts and Recessions……
Economy be damned, I am not participating in any recession. It appears at this stage that many die hard fly fishermen feel about the same way, and are booking fishing vacations around the world. We have offered our version of a “Stimulus Package", and have welcomed the responses and laughter that came with it. As of today, we still have a few spots left for the early June stonefly hatch.
With regards to “Bailouts” - well I just bought all of my guides new bilge pumps for their driftboats. If it keeps raining and snowing, they are going to need those rascals. That’s a real bailout put to good use if you ask me.
Not many photos in the last few days - just imagine snow, wind, snow, wind and a little more wind.
Mr. weatherman is calling for 70 degrees this week - I smell some snowmelt and flooding around the corner. I think that means its time to go turkey hunting with the boys!

After fishing dark to dark for 2 months on the coast chasing steelhead - it was a welcome change to take a couple short floats on the Big Hole the last few days in 55 degree weather. Sometimes all the stars line up and if you can see it happening - when you do, you are a fool to not drop whatever it is you are doing and go fishing.
Smack dab in the middle of soldering some water lines (love the Montana winters!) - I came up for air and there was a Skwala Stonefly crawling around in my driveway. Well if you have been in my driveway, you know we are about a mile from the Big Hole, and if a Skwala made it this far, there must be a few around. Adding that presumtion to the mildly cloudy warm weather this afternoon, it only seemed right to take my wife and McCall for a short float and see if the trout were looking up.
Well they were. Alot of them.
We only saw one other angler, none other than Jerry Kustich himself, walk wading and fishing upstream - big suprise there! I am sure he got wuite a chuckle when we landed #1 on the other side of the river, when McCall started laughing and screaming wanting to hold the fish. Immediately after releasing #1, she wanted another, and another, and another…. you get my point. Sometimes the fishing just doesn’t really matter. Unless your 3 year old girl wants one - then you really better be on your game!
Here are a couple highlights - no real big fish, but plenty of action!

April and May sure can produce some great fishing when the weather is right!

The last week or so of the coastal season was nothing short of great fishing. We averaged 10 hookups a day both nymphing and swinging on 4 different rivers. What a great way to wrap the season up. Dayna learned what the ninja hookset was all about, and I learned that even I can farm fish after fish. I guess the fact is you just lose alot of these rascals….
I did land my share though - and it felt good to run a fly rod instead of a driftboat!

Rooster Scores early in the game

I also spent a halfday on the water with a great friend and one of our new guides for this coming Montana season - Mike Zavodlov of MikeZ’s Guide Service. We spent most of the day swapping notes, interupted by the occasional chrome steelhead jumping around..
No tellum creek chrome

Back here in Good Old Montana - things are starting to happen. Looks like we may have some first hand info for you tommorrow when Nate and I try out a few new bugs on the local rivers. Two weeks here in Montana and it’s off to AK for the annual Steelhead trip with Travis on the Adventurous!

Another steelhead season on the coast is behind us now. There are a few good days left especially with the rain that is on us right now. Lucky for me I will be fishing with Dayna and a few of the local boys for the next few days. Hopefully Dayna will keep up her tendency to find big fish with a few more of these….
Dayna on the Bogacheil

It will be great to get back to Montana next week. Word is I have a couple people really looking forward to seeing their daddy. If this doesnt make you miss home I dont know what would!!
McCall and the new addition

Stay tuned for more steelhead action from the next few days when I get to run a flyrod instead of a driftboat!
