of spring creeks and tailwaters....

Our freestone rivers are currently in 100% snowmelt runoff stage. The flows will probably increase and crest at some point in the next 7 to 10 days, or maybe not - with our weather patterns this spring it is anyones guess. The good news is that the tailwaters - The Beaverhead and The Missouri - are fishing exceptionally well right now, as well as a couple of our private spring creeks. So between road trips too the Missouri, going early to the Beaverhead (there is some pressure up there) and hitting some sleeper creeks we have been busy for the last week. A little break in the action now is welcome as we wait for Maw Nature to get control of our river flows. Time to finish spring cleaning, and of course, have a party to kick the season off. If you are around this weekend and smell something delicous, that is a pig being roasted for Saturday night! Dont be afraid to stop in and say hello and drink a cold one.
A couple of highlight shots from the other day at “the hog farm"…

Until next time - Keep castin’!

That good old high road to Melrose

The Big Hole is starting to come out of its first highwater of the season, and the caddis are starting to finally show themselves each afternoon. So to us in Twin Bridges, it’s time to make sure the bearings are in good shape on your trailers, your tie down strap isnt too fraid up, and your anchor is in the good old rubber bucket. If you have been over the high road, you know the deal. It EATS boat trailers. It deals out flat tires like a Vegas 21 dealer throwing 3’s and 5’s (god I hate them sometimes) - and forget about keeping your boat clean. I mean forget it, it aint going to happen!
The upside to this is that 18 mile stretch of washboard dirt road drops you into one of the prettiest river valleys in the Rockies. Its well worth the trip, regarless of the wear and tear on the equipment.
You can always tell a Big Hole River Guide. His boat doesn’t look anything like some of the boats that run the Madison and Yellowsotne rivers. In fact, you may have to scrape the mud away to see what color it really is. There are thousands of rock chips in the paint, and as far as trailer lights, well I can about guarantee they havent worked in a month.
Is it all worth it?
Of course. That middle stretch of the Big Hole River is some of the best trout water in the Rocky Mountains - trust your guide on that one!

dont take anything for granted....

Back in my charter boat days I used to follow Tred Barta and his fishing styles pretty closely. A fairly argumentative character, known for “The Barta Way", he still remains an icon in both the saltwater and bowhunting worlds. Recently, Tred suffered a terrible tragedy known as a spinal stroke. More on his accident and condition HERE. Paralysis is reality for this condition, and a once unstopable outdoorsman may very well see his next elk or the Jersey Canyons from a wheelchair.
He has always said “Dont take ANYTHING for granted". I think we should all apply that to our lives more. Whether it is teaching your children to fish, training that new puppy, or walking up the river one more hole - we all have room for improvements - me especially.

Spring has sprung

With the steelhead season and the first trips of our Montana season in the rearview mirror, it was great to take a day with Dayna and McCall yesterday and try out the new Clackacraft Skiff on the Big Hole. With the exception of McCalls new “fishin’ pole” being yarded over the side by a trout, the day was pretty steady with great action on all sorts of patterns. Of note was the suprising amount of skwala stones that are still around. What a great dry fly spring. And most people will tell you the skwala action stops east of Missoula!
Wonder what we should start with today????

More spring cleaning today - back on the river tommorrow with our friends from Hatch reels.

Till next time - keep casting!

Nate just got back in from a little recon fishing with Jack Mitchell - from the photos he showed me just now, it looks like the big fish are looking for some caddis! If you are coming this week - you just might see the magic happen!
Nates best one yet

As of today, the caddis are low in the systems. With another day or two of good weather it could bust wide open. Stay tuned.

We just returned to the dock in Wrangell, AK after two of the greatest weeks of steelhead fishing I have ever seen. Tomorrow night in Seattle for a dinner at The Steelhead Diner with all of our Seattle friends, guests, and spouses - and then its back to Montana, just in time for the Mothers Day Caddis hatch!!

I will upload the photos to the gallery on Monday when I return to the shop.
