Check out this link 20# Brown Trout caught int he Big Hole River- seems that some of those “bottom” snags on the Big Hole may not have been “bottom” -
Really its a shame to see such a fish taken from our river, however it sure is proof positive that they are in there!

All of our rivers are dropping into perfect shape. The next few days will be some great fishing.

More later - I gotta go clean the boat and ice up the cooler.

Sometimes its fun to forget about all the things that make us all stressed out. Water conditions, Fish that will or will not bite, enough food for everyone, boats, trailers, cabins, computers, trucks, gear, flies, you name it, we worry about it. I am sure many of you have a longer list.
Well the other night our good friend Joe was talking about Chinese children making pets out of giant beatles and keeping them on leashes….. so of course we (actually McCall) has a pet Stonefly. Yup. Tied up on 5x tippet. We started with tying thread, but it would get caught in the wings.

So next time you are feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders - find some crazy bug and make a pet out of it for your son or daughter. Heck, make one for yourself…

As far as the fishing goes, well, it’s June in Montana so the fishing is naturally pretty darned good. There are stoneflies, stoneflies, and more stoneflies. Throw in a few caddis, some pmd’s and some good cloudy day streamer action and you have yourself a day.

One of our guides, Brett Seng snapped this cool photo on the side of the Big Hole yesterday - guess what the trout were eatin’?

Until next time - thanks for readin’ and keep the emails coming.

Wow, what a week! From “Sh@#t where are we going to go today? The Missouri?” To today, when “it doesnt matter where you go” - it has been a roller coaster week. Great numbers of fish for everyone at the lodge this week made for some big fish stories at cocktail hour!
In the news is the addition of our new chef - Eric. In one word, the food is awesome. Beyond awesome. What a great addition to our team. Not to mention the load it takes off my wagon!
Things are going to get real interesting around here the next couple weeks - stoneflies on the Big Hole, PMD’s on the Beaverhead, good to great streamer conditions on the Jeff and Madison, and all the creeks are shaping up as well.
Once again, we made it through the run-off season without cancelling a trip. Heck of a deal. Told you so.

Thanks for reading - keep your emails and comments coming!

Seems like what we thought may have been the start of summer last week turned out to be just a teaser. Rain, snow, and a good dose of wind have been on us for the last couple days. Mr. Weatherman says its not going to last much longer (the wintery weather) in fact, as I sit here sipping a cocktail the sun is breaking through and that darn wind is backing off. What in the world does this mean?
Well, not much unless you are here this week trying to find clean water! The boys all caught fish today on the Beaverhead, Missouri, and lower Madison Rivers - keeping the streak alive. We have NEVER cancelled a trip due to weather. Thats not to say we haven’t had some tough fishing - after all, it is still fishing. I am pretty convinced the trout dont like the weather changes any more than we do!

Moving right along - what’s the forecast? I am betting we are back on the Big Hole River by the middle of the week chuckin’ stone nymphs and buggers. If you are scheduled to fish Montana this week and happen to be reading this - don’t call your outfitter and cancel. The water will drop, the fish will rise, the beer will be cold and Montana will not dissapoint. She has a pretty good habit of living up to her promises!

I am personally back on the river in the morning, and with any luck we will find a fish worth taking a photo of - in the mean time, here is a pretty nice pair of Browns that our good friend Jay Virnoche tangled with last week on our Spring Creek, that is starting to get the nickname “Hog Pen"……

Keep the comments and emails coming - until next time keep castin’

How to throw a party......

Well - the rivers are still pushing pretty hard. The Big Hole River is around 8000 cfs and the Jefferson has flood warnings. The fishing, however, is pretty good on the Beaverhead, Missouri, and some of our stillwaters.
Enough about the fishing though.
This is more about what you do when the conditions are less than ideal.
Here in Montana you call all your buddies, fill a driftboat with ice and beer (literally) and put a pig on a spit. Instant party. Suddenly the fishing is priority #2!
The pig roast was a big hit - and went well up until Tyler showed up with a live rattlesnake. Lets just say a bunch of cowboys, fishing guides, and general vagabonds mixed with several cases of beer and a rattlesnake is a bad mix. No-one got bit. But its a great story for the river!!
Thanks to everyone from Simms, Yellow Dog, Cliff Flyboxes, Winston, Clackacraft and all the boys for showing up and behaving so well!!
Nate and Matt checking out dinner
Have to take the horns off to stir the pot.
Tommy, Sue and Garey on the old ford eating some bbq.

I suppose there were a few good fish caught this weekend as well!
Danielle Will from Simms with the winner of the big fish contest...

Five or six more days of snow melt, and we should be fishing the Big Hole!!

Till next time - watch out for good buddies with Rattlesnakes!
